Choosing the Right Toothbrush

What are the most common and perhaps the most important routines when it comes to oral hygiene?

  1. Brushing your teeth twice daily.

  2. Flossing your teeth twice daily.

  3. Visiting your dentist for regular exams and checkups.

Patients hear dentists and dental hygienists say this repeatedly BECAUSE these healthy oral hygiene habits make up the foundation of a healthy smile. And that is what we’re all about!

It is important to note that the results of brushing your teeth twice a day can be optimized by selecting the right toothbrush. Of course, all toothbrushes share some similarities in that they are designed to clean your teeth, but toothbrushes are also designed specifically for certain users. It is important to know what your own dental needs are and then to select a product that safely and effectively addresses your unique dental health needs.

So how do you choose the right toothbrush? When choosing a toothbrush for yourself or your children, consider the following tips and recommendations before buying:

Decide if you prefer a manual or electric toothbrush.

Both manual and electric toothbrushes can thoroughly clean your teeth when used properly. However, electric toothbrushes have certain benefits that may help persons who brush too hard, need help gauging the amount of time spent brushing, or have limited or developing manual dexterity. With features such as a signal or automatic shutoff when you’ve brushed your teeth for two minutes, electric toothbrushes can be a good choice for children or anyone who likes to ensure they are not skimping on oral healthcare.

Select the right bristles.

Soft-bristled toothbrushes are the right choice for most people. When used properly, soft bristles can adequately remove plaque and debris without being too hard on gums or enamel. Medium or hard bristles should only be used per a dentist’s recommendation.

Choose the right size and shape for your mouth and hand.

Toothbrush heads and handles come in all kinds of shapes and sizes. Toothbrushes with smaller heads are recommended because they can reach to every area of your mouth. Some toothbrushes also have patterned bristles or tapered bristles, which may be recommended for certain people. And non-slip grip handled toothbrushes can be a great choice for kids (or those of us with butterfingers)!

Avoid defaulting to the cheapest option.

Toothbrushes can seem expensive especially when it’s recommended to replace your toothbrush or toothbrush head every 3 months or sooner. However, remember that selecting the right toothbrush has a positive impact on your oral and dental health, which can increase confidence and prevent more expensive dental treatments and procedures down the road. Your smile is such an important part of life that it’s worth investing in.

Pick your favorite color or design!

Ok. Once you’ve selected the right option, bristles and size…make it fun by choosing your favorite color or design! Match it to your bathroom decor or pick a bright color that feels like a pop of sunshine in the morning.
