When do I need a dental crown?

When a tooth has been compromised, your dentist will often recommend a dental crown. A crown is a covering for the tooth that keeps them from being damaged or weakened further. At WoodSprings Dentistry, our dentists can evaluate your teeth to determine if you need a dental crown or if another more conservative approach may be right for the level of decay or damage in your tooth.

Dental crowns are used for various reasons in dentistry, such as:

  • Restoring teeth that have a cavity too large for a traditional filling

  • Providing structure to teeth that have been cracked or weakened in some way

  • A root canal has been performed on the tooth

  • To correct discoloration or misshapen teeth

How is a dental crown placed?

Before placing the crown, your dentist will need to prepare the tooth. Your tooth will be filed down so that the crown can fit onto it securely. Any decay in teeth will also be removed. If a large area of your tooth is missing, due to decay or damage, your dentist will use a filling material to “build-up” the tooth to support the crown. Once that is done, you may receive a temporary crown while your dentist is creating the permanent crown. When the permanent crown arrives, it will be fitted to the tooth and an x-ray is taken to make sure that it fits properly. If it does, your dentist will cement the crown onto the tooth, where it will sit securely.

How do I take care of my dental crown?

Once you have a dental crown, it becomes even more pertinent to care for your oral health. Be sure that you are brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing once a day.

Your dentist will provide more information on how to care for your crown and make sure it is kept healthy and clean.
