What is a root canal?

There is a soft tissue called pulp inside of your tooth. This is made up of blood vessels, connective tissues, and nerves. These are used to grow the roots of your teeth. A full grown tooth does not need this pulp because it’s only needed in development.

During a root canal, that “pulp” inside of the tooth is removed so you no longer feel pain. A filling material is then placed inside of the tooth called “Gutta Percha.” Root canals It can help with restoring your ability to chew, keeping the tooth from changing color, and even protecting other teeth.

Why is a root canal helpful?

A root canal is when a diseased or damaged pulp inside the tooth is medically removed.

This treatment is the best way to relieve pain and prevent losing the tooth as well. The procedure’s aim is to remove any inflamed or infected pulp from the tooth, prevent further infection, and protect the tooth from further damage. Root canal treatment is highly successful when it comes to preserving natural teeth at a rate of 95% or more. A root canal treatment, when needed, can restore your smile to its normal look and feel and prevent the need for a dental implant.

Does a root canal hurt?

Anesthesia is always used during a root canal so it shouldn’t hurt any more than a regular procedure. Root canals can cause your teeth or gums to be sore afterwards for a few days but it shouldn’t be particularly painful.

In addition to a pain-free procedure, our office and staff prioritize your comfort during every visit. Learn more about the Patient Experience at WoodSprings Dentistry, serving patients in The Woodlands and Spring, TX.

How do I know if I need a root canal?

If you have a deep cavity, filling issue, or a cracked tooth then you may need a root canal to fix it. Finding that your tooth is sensitive to both hot and cold can be a sign that you need a root canal.

Not sure if you need a root canal? Ask yourself these questions:

  • Am I experiencing pain in any of my teeth?

  • Are my teeth sensitive to heat or cold?

  • Did my dentist recommend a root canal? (This one should be a dead giveaway.)

If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, then our dentists recommend that you come into our Woodlands/Spring office for an exam. If root canal treatment is necessary, Drs. Samantha and James Tejada will explain the procedure and answer any questions you may have about why you need a root canal.

IMPORTANT: Please remember that diseased pulp will not heal itself. If a root canal is recommended, even if you do not feel significant pain, your oral health will simply continue to deteriorate and the infection can spread.

How long will a root canal take?

About 90 minutes are needed for each tooth that requires a root canal. Molars can actually take up to two hours when necessary. If you are concerned about the time required for your root canal, ask the dentist about your specific case and what your expectations should be.

What is the aftercare or recovery when you have a root canal?

Let’s be honest. Root canal treatments have a bad reputation.

However, the recovery is less painful and difficult than many other dental procedures. Swelling and pain should not be severe, and anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen can help with any discomfort. You will want to be sure to avoid hot beverages or foods until after your anesthesia wears off. Dentists also recommend you eat soft foods for the first few days and try to chew on the opposite side from the root canal treatment site. Continue your normal oral hygiene habits and always follow any instructions given by your dentist.

At WoodSprings Dentistry, Drs. Samantha and James Tejada take great care to make sure each patient has all the information needed to have a comfortable recovery after a root canal. If you have any questions about your root canal therapy, please ask your dentist or hygienist prior to your root canal procedure or at your next appointment.
