What is sedation dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is professionally administered medication used to provide relaxation, pain-relief or anxiety-relief during dental procedures. Medication can be used to help those who need it so that they can relax during the dental procedure, even something as routine as a cleaning or exam. There are different levels of sedation that means patients are generally awake, unless under general anesthesia.

Sedation levels include:

  • Minimal Sedation

  • Moderate Sedation

What is minimal sedation?

Usually minimal sedation consists of nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, that is inhaled from a mask. It can help the patient relax and the levels are easily controlled by the dentist. There are no after effects of using nitrous oxide and you can head home or drive alone afterwards.

Oral sedation is another way to provide minimal sedation levels. This is when medication is taken orally that can help to reduce anxiety or stress. These medications may make you drowsy and can potentially cause you to fall asleep.

What is moderate sedation?

An IV is used to provide this level of sedation. Providing the drugs through the veins mean they can work more quickly and provide a deeper level of sedation. This type of sedation does require a driver afterwards.
