What Happens at My Dental Exam & Cleaning?

  1. A Physical Exam - Most teeth cleanings are performed by a dental hygienist. Before the actual cleaning process begins, they start with a physical exam of your entire mouth.

  2. Removing Plaque and Tartar - Your cleaning will begin with our dental hygienist cleaning your teeth to remove bacteria, plaque, and tartar.  The dental hygienist uses a scaler to remove plaque and tartar around your gum line and in between your teeth. The more tartar build-up that you have, the longer this will take.

  3. Gritty Toothpaste Cleaning - After your teeth are tartar-free, the hygienist brushes them with a high-powered electric brush. The hygienist will use professional toothpaste with a gritty consistency to help gently scrub your teeth.

  4. Expert Flossing - The hygienist will remove the final traces of plaque and tartar between your teeth with an expert flossing session. The dental hygienists can get deep between your teeth and locate any trouble spots.

  5. Rinsing - The last step in your dental cleaning will be to rinse out your mouth with water to get rid of any debris. Next, you will be given a fluoride rinse to protect your teeth and help fight against cavities for several months.

One of the benefits of visiting your dentist at least twice a year for exams & cleanings is that we can prevent problems such as gum disease, tooth decay, infections, and other oral health issues from developing and worsening.

Suppose the dental team identifies any dental or oral health concerns during your exam? In that case, our dentists will make appropriate recommendations and discuss the options with you to determine a treatment plan that will allow you to enjoy optimal oral and dental health.
